ocPortal is going to help me finally realize my 10-year NationalAdventurer.com dream of creating an enterprise-level community-built guide to adventure and recreational activities (for the United States) with global/category/subject/location targeted advertising.
The original version had 460,000+ interlinked pages of hand-coded HTML! It proved to be entirely unmanageable as I couldn't find a search & replace program that could handle the large numbers of pages in each category. Small changes such as a single global ad change took days to perform! I also had to hand-code and upload all user contributions.
The next attempt was with phpBB3 with a Kiss Portal extension. I had high hopes for this and put several months of effort into it only to but up against an unrecognized limit of about 2500 forums. I was planning to have forms as a first post in each forum that would contain the real information and the topics would help fill in the missing information gaps. Not perfect, but it would have been much easier than the HTML version. The only way to get around the 2500 forum limit was to have multiple forum installations and try to link them together.
It was while I was researching this possibility that I came across ocPortal and immediately saw the potential for members to input the main information into a Wiki+ and/or catalogs and just use the forums for subject discussion. The possibilities are amazing and it's totally scalable as the site grows.
I have a lot to learn, and a lot of foundation work to do, but, I'm already anticipating my IPO in 5 years or so, LOL!
Not as dumb as I sound...
Just winded from the STEEP climb to ocPortal nirvana!
