FTP directory that was given is not valid..

Good morning, I successfully installed Composr yesterday to replace PHP Nuke on our Linux Webserver yesterday. (About time, I know!) I am having some difficulty getting the Upgrader to work. In fact I had alot of diffficulty during the Setup wizard with the FTP portion as well.  I am getting the following error, when I try to do the upgrade:

The FTP directory that was given is not valid; you likely entered the wrong FTP path. The FTP directory must be the same as that in which the installer is located. You may be able to find the path by looking at the path displayed in your FTP software (or the path component of the FTP URL if you uploaded using a web browser). If you can not get the quick installer to work, you may need to consider using the manual installer instead [Full error: ftp_chdir() [function.ftp-chdir.php]: Failed to change directory.. Case: 1]

I have installed the software in /var/www/html Does the upgrader need access to this directory? I am unsure on how to accomplish this.  I have vsftpd Installed on this machine and am able to connect to our server. Thanks for any assistance, the software looks brillant so far,  thanks alot!

Hello,

FTP paths are usually not going from the filesystem root, if I were to guess the path would be just '/html', but it really depends how your server is configured.

If at all possible I'd configure the server to use suEXEC, or switch to a server with this. Almost all hosts nowadays will use this as it greatly simplifies things and opens up possibilities for more advanced web apps. Without suEXEC Composr would rely on FTP to do any kind of management of its own files.

Hello,

if FTP is not an option on my server (they have sftp) should we download the zip and just update the files?

thank you

Stevyn

update: i replaced the files and did the intergrity scan and database check and all looks good.

Hi,

(I didn't re-read the rest of this topic)…

The quick installer usually works fine without FTP, you just need a SuExec or equivalent server. i.e. a server where the web user is the same as the account holder of the hosting so has full access to write out new directories and files.

Otherwise you can use the manual installer.
