This is something we implemented for v10.1 in a very clean way – selling access to download entries. Unfortunately we decided to shelve that release, and go straight to v11. So this functionality will be released as stable in v11.
Have you considered linking out to something like BandCamp? Right now that's what I'd recommend, using a specialist tool for that part of your site.
