Here's a simple tutorial on how to use the main_countdown block on entry screens for calendar events.

Step 1:
Edit your CALENDAR_EVENT_SCREEN.tpl file in your theme
Step 2:
FIND

AFTER the +END Tempcode tag, ADD:
