Custom Profile Field Failed Causing Join Fail

Floundering, urgent help needed!
Hi All,I tried to create a new custom profile field but when I saved it an error occurred 'PHP timed out after 60 seconds'.
This caused any attempt to view/edit a profile to produce it's own error (row 59 related).
I removed row 59 from the cms_f_custom_fields table which then allowed me to view/edit a users profile but joining the site now fails with the following error:
Unfortunately a query has failed .... [Field 'field_59' doesn't have a default value] ....
I have restricted joining the site with 'Invites Enabled' (because I couldn't find a method of disabling new members) as I get up to 20 new members per day and don't want them to see the error message.
I see in cms_f_member_custom_fields contains columns field_59 and field_59_text_parsed but don't have the courage to delete these columns without confirmation that this won't make things worse.
Could someone advise me on this and point me in the direction of anywhere else I need to look to resolve this problem.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly received.

Deleting the columns as you figured necessary should fix it.
