We just finished our first weekly live chat, where we discussed a few things:
  1. Proposed new development model for Composr (PDF attached for this)
  2. Some practical Composr CMS solutions - previous/next links for news articles, customised error messages, dynamic site messages from staff
  3. Whether to keep v10.1 in beta and head straight to v11 (probably yes, so development resources are better focused and due to lack of in-depth user testing on 10.1)
  4. Priorities for future development, challenges (particularly around themeing, block layout, how to serve different kinds of users best esp novices).

EDIT:

Archived live chat:

We'll have a new chat every week. I'm hoping we can pull in some more questions from users next week, as I think this week it suffered a bit from me waffling on unprepared. It's a great opportunity to ask very practical stuff to be shown visually, that otherwise you'd have to pay a developer to do or suffer some brief text reply on the forum.

Please make sure you have your headset and microphone working well, as a sticking point this week was feedback. If you have a mic too close to a headset, or sound coming out of speakers, it'll create a really bad echo effect. I feel a bit bad for having to mute bobmiers.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about Composr whenever you see the opportunity or support me on Patreon.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying Composr on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Chris:  Don't feel bad, it was the 1st time that I had used the chat program and a long time since I had used my camera and microphone.

Before I join again I will go through my system to make sure that things are working correctly.

Further more, I didn't plan to speak anyway. Just to listen

FYI I didn't see the 1st 15 minutes for some reason even though I joined several minutes early.  (I'll view the archive.) Also, when you had to mute my audio a second time, the chat software went back to the opening screen and went through the setup again.

Again, no apology necessary.

FYI about the video recording, Open Broadcaster Software lets me record local video at a higher bitrate and resolution than I'm streaming, and that's the copy that I'm uploading and publishing afterwards, just like my other live shows. I've left the automatic archive up as unlisted this week so as not to break your embed, Chris, but I'd be happy to post the published video as soon as it's online in the future.

It will still be limited to how well my video call performs during the stream, but I unfortunately don't have much control over that. I'm going to turn down the streaming bitrate next week to try and get better call performance (another reason to wait for the HQ upload instead of using the auto archive next week.)

Ah, cool, thanks. I'm starting to put together something of a process for this, I've noted that down.
I just edited my post with the final video.

Hi,
I wasn't able to participate during the live session so the video was a blessing. I may not be able to attend further ones because of prior commitments. I found the discussion and code writing benefical. I'm relative new to Compo.sr. I'm in the process of planning and developing some personal websites. I had installed Compo.sr on two but really hadn't done much beyond the basic install. However, I'm focused on the development of those sites and others. After revewing two sites where I have been using Joomla and b2evolution, I established a set of criteria I wanted a CMS to meet. After a closed look at Compo.sr, it became the clear choice for futher work on my sites.  I began to study the documentation, videos, etc. along with the ebook available via Kindle. (All every helpful.) At first the underlying structure of Compo.sr was confusing but I'm now at a point where things are making more sense. I have programmed some in years passed (HTML, php, APL, and others) so reading comcode, tempcode, CSS, php (although difficult) is beginning to make sense.  As I dig deeper, I am increasingly impressed with how robust the whole structure is. As I gain more knowledge and skill, I hope I'll be able to contribute some.
