Paul,

Your news feeds look great.  Are these RSS feeds?

How did you get your news feeds to retrieve and display the images with the news article?

I have a fitness website. I want to retrieve rss news from: http://www.health.com/fitness

Their RSS news feed link is:  http://www.health.com/fitness/feed

But when I set up the RSS in composr it only displays text. Boring!!!  O_o

boring RSS feed style.png I want the news to be displayed with images like it is at the http://www.health.com/fitness page.
Just like what you have done with your site. Also, how do you keep the news article "inline"? When you click on the Title of the news article I don't want my vistitors or members to leave my website just to read the news article.  I want them to stay on my site to read the article. Credit to health.com will of coarse be displayed, but is there a way to keep the reader at your website while they read the articles?

Your input on how to accomplish this appreciated

I can only speak for Composr's defaults, but I had a look at this.

1) The images.

I had a look and it is using a Yahoo extension to RSS. I have implemented support for this:
https://github.com/ocproducts/composr/commit/1cdb33d9c998c1b1f49fc08db6cbc97ea4689c60

However… Unfortunately the images referenced in this feed are actually missing, so it is showing broken images. So it's kind of unfortunate that my improvement here (which will come in the next patch release) is actually adding additional errors, but I think I should still keep it because it really is a corrupt feed. Maybe email the site and let them know the problem.

2) Showing news internally.

This is something I don't really want to included by default, someone would need to add it in.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about Composr whenever you see the opportunity or support me on Patreon.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying Composr on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

The news on the front page of my site is taken from the news addon, not through rss. The display of this news per my front page is via modified template and css edits.

The fading images on the front page is done via a modified template and css of the news_fader block.

I don't use external rss on my site.

Thanks for responding Paul.

Side Note
Looks like WordPress has got their game on, for this subject.

Would you be so kind as to shed the light and share with the Composr community on what modifications you did and from which files to obtain the results you were after and achieved?

The fading news on my frontpage is still a work in progress. Still figuring out the best way to achieve what I want. Not quite there yet.

I have decided to release all themes etc on my site for download. Registration will be required, which is a small price for the work being put into the releases. I will post them in the forums here, linking to my site. This will allow me to have more control of version updates etc. Support will also be via my site.

I already have 4 x themes available for download. Working on a couple more.
There are a couple of blocks I am also working on, the news fader being one of them.
